Visit the State Park in Savannah, GA

Whether you’re camping overnight or just visiting during the day, Skidaway Island State Park is an excellent addition to your Savannah itinerary. It borders the Skidaway Narrows, which is part of Georgia’s Intracoastal Waterway. There are around six miles of hiking trails available at the park, as well as a section of the Colonial Coastal Birding Trail. Be sure to bring your camera, as you never know what beautiful sights you might find while here.

Hike the Trails

The most popular hiking path is the Sandpiper Trail Loop. It totals one mile and winds past salt flats and tidal creeks and through maritime forests. It will probably take you about one hour to complete. This is an easy walk, and sections of the trail are even ADA accessible. Best of all, leashed pets are welcome to explore with you. (By the way, did you know that The Inn on West Liberty has pet-friendly rooms? You can bring your four-legged friend with you on your next adventure!)

If you’d like to explore a little more, head to the Big Ferry Trail. This two-mile loop can be extended to a full three miles and will take between two and three hours to traverse. Leashed pets are welcome on this trail as well, as are bicycles.

Go Birdwatching

If you’re an avid birdwatcher from the South, you’ve likely heard of the Colonial Coast Birding Trail. It winds up the coast of Georgia, stretching through many of the state’s parks. This, of course, includes Skidaway Island. You’ll be able to see plenty of songbirds, as well as shorebirds, wading birds, and other types of waterfowl. If you’re visiting in the spring or fall, you’ll get to see the warbler migration. In the spring and summer, you might see nesting osprey or painted buntings.
