Your Guide to the Savannah Jazz Festival
The Savannah Jazz Festival boasts some of the nation’s greatest jazz acts, and is a cousin to one of the South’s biggest musical events, the Savannah Music Fest. Each year the festival attracts a diverse lineup along with crowds from all over the South. Don’t miss your chance to get down with the melodious sounds of the sax.
Who You’ll See at the Festival
During the third weekend of September, Savannah streets fill to the brim with the sounds of jazz. Although the event is so expansive, you’ll want to plan to see as many acts as possible. The festival kicks off with performances by Savannah schools marching band and Georgia Southern University’s jazz performers. Follow the sounds of the trumpet from square to square for songs by the Wesleyan Gospel Choir and the U.S. Military Band. Where to Go
Opening night takes place at Lucas Theatre and features the bulk of young, local talent. Plan to spend the rest of your weekend cruising in between Martin Luther King Boulevard and East Broad. Stay close to Forsyth Park, as most of the popular performances take place on the lawn, but don’t forget to roam towards the river for a less crowded tour of the festival.
Explore the Vendors
The Savannah Jazz Festival hosts some of the finest food, wine, and craft vendors in the city. Get local with Serena’s hot fried catfish, indulge in a scoop of Leopold’s old fashioned ice cream, and do not let the weekend end without delighting your tastebuds with a spaghetti grilled cheese from The Big Cheese food truck.
