Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room
Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room is more than just a restaurant. It’s a piece of Savannah history. This iconic institution has been dishing up hearty home-cooked Southern food to locals and visitors alike. Mrs. Wilkes, opened by Selma Wilkes in 1943, used to be a boarding house. Today, her legacy continues in every dish served at the family-style tables. Mrs. Wilkes is open from Monday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., though you’ll want to get there early to snag seats. The line usually wraps around the block. Once inside, you’ll sit at a table for 10 that’s crowded with platters of mac and cheese, fried chicken, cornbread, okra, and other staples of the South. There’s nothing more Savannah than passing around plates of stick-to-your-ribs food while making new friends.

Without a doubt, one of our favorite restaurants is The Public Kitchen & Lounge. Their menu takes standard dishes and elevates them. They’re well known for their burgers and sandwiches, making this a great lunch spot for when you’re in town. Their burgers use free-range grass-fed ground beef sourced from a local family farm. If you feel like indulging in the ultimate burger experience, order the Big Mack. This massive meal comes with lettuce, a jalapeno mac & cheese cake, applewood-smoked bacon, and a coca cola bbq sauce.
